Mercers Road

Mercers Road is a simple loft extension to an end of terrace Victorian house in Islington. Our clients were keen to add a flexible space to their home that could be used as an office, bedroom or living room whilst also making the most of the views across the gardens beyond. An ensuite bathroom was also included. The project required the insertion of a new dormer and a “hip to gable” conversion.

The atypical design of the new pine stair to the new loft space and the insertion of a large south facing roof light to the front means that direct sunlight is now brought down into the centre of the house, adding a sense of lightness. Arriving in the loft space from the back of the room means that the user is immediately presented with the garden view. This arrangement of the stair, following the slope of the roof, removes the need for a full width dormer. The new dormer and adjacent roof is clad in black zinc. We also couldn’t recommend PCA highly enough for their professionalism coordinating and securing the planning approvals with the local council, alleviating the stress out of the situation. We’re now looking forward to working on the final stages of our build."
